Urinary Incontinence

More than half of all American women will experience urinary incontinence (UI), the involuntary loss of urine, during the course of their lives. Some women with UI may lose a few drops of urine while running or coughing. Others may feel a strong, sudden urge to urinate just before losing a large amount of urine. Many women experience both symptoms.

You may feel uncomfortable discussing incontinence with your doctor. But if incontinence is frequent or is affecting your quality of life, you should know that new treatment options can relieve your symptoms—even if previous treatments have failed you—without the pain and debilitation of traditional invasive surgery. There are several reasons why it is important to seek medical advice for UI:

Urinary incontinence-UI may be keeping you from enjoying many activities with your family and friends in order to avoid embarrassment.

  • UI can occur during sexual activity and cause tremendous emotional distress.
  • UI may indicate a more serious underlying condition, especially if it's associated with blood in your urine.
  • UI may increase the risk of falls in older adults as they rush to make it to the toilet.
